Five common categories of daily chemical preservatives
Cosmetic manufacturers add preservatives in order to protect the quality of cosmetics and extend their use period.
General preservatives are divided into five categories, namely, alcohols, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, a mixture of methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT), iodopropynol Five types of butyl carbamate (IPBC).
Alcohols
The common phenoxyethanol is an alcohol preservative. Generally, it is not used alone but used in combination with other preservatives to reduce the amount of use.
Parabens
Paraben (paraben) preservatives are currently the most frequently used preservatives in cosmetics, and they are also controversial preservatives in recent years. It includes methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isopropyl and isobutyl paraben.
Formaldehyde emitting body
Common formaldehyde-releasing body preservatives in cosmetics include 1,3-dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMDMH), imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternary ammonium salt-15 and Sodium Hydroxymethyl Glycinate. This type of preservatives are safe, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and non-teratogenic to the human body under the limit requirements of relevant laws and regulations.
Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone
The mixture of methyl chloroisothiazolinone and methyl isothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT) with a concentration ratio of 3:1, commonly known as cassone, is currently widely used in the corrosion protection of wash-off cosmetics.
In addition to synergistic use with other preservatives, MIT can also be used alone to protect the stability of the system. MIT has good pH and temperature stability and can be used in a formulation system with a pH of 2-10. It is currently recommended not to use in retention products.
Iodopropynol butyl carbamate
Iodopropynol butyl carbamate cannot be used in oral hygiene and lip products. When the amount exceeds 0.02% in retained products, the words "containing iodine" should be marked.
Note: The market claims "no preservatives", in fact, the preservatives used are not listed in the preservatives list.
