Compounding of preservatives in cosmetics
generally speaking, a certain preservative can only kill or suppress a certain colony. therefore, two or more preservatives are usually used in cosmetic formulations to achieve a broad antibacterial spectrum.
1. expand the antibacterial spectrum
one kind of preservative works well on some microorganisms but bad on others, while another kind of preservative is just the opposite. combining the two can achieve the purpose of broad-spectrum antibacterial prevention.
2. improve the efficacy
two preservatives with different sterilization mechanisms are shared, and their effect is often not a simple superimposing effect, but a multiplying effect. usually, the satisfactory sterilization efficiency is still maintained when the amount of use is reduced.
3. anti-secondary pollution
some preservatives have better killing effect on mold and rot microorganisms, but have a limited residual effect, while another type of preservatives have little killing effect, but the inhibitory effect is obvious. mixed use of the two can not only ensure the quality of storage and shelf life, but also it can avoid repeated pollution during use.
4. improve safety
single use of preservatives sometimes has to achieve the effect of preservatives, and the amount needs to exceed the allowed amount in the rules. if multiple preservatives are mixed under the allowed amount, it can not only achieve the prevention and control intention, but also ensure the safety of the product.
5. prevent the occurrence of drug resistance
if a certain microorganism is simply resistant to one preservative, the time for it to become resistant to two or more preservatives is naturally much more difficult.
